Project DeCiTeL: Democratic Citizenship Teaching and Learning

Contenuto

The Democratic Citizenship Teaching and Learning (DeCiTeL) project aims to improve
teacher education policies and practices across Europe. A collaboration between higher
education institutions, formal and non-formal citizenship education providers and
European networks, it will develop and trial innovative teacher training methods and
provide teachers with authentic international learning experiences.
To create the basis for sustainable change, the project will bridge the gap between
teaching and policy at local and European levels. Through its initial work on establishing
a Teachers Alliance Network, the project aims to contribute to a framework for the
exchange of good practices, methods, and tools across national and curricular boundaries.

2025-2027
The project enhances the EU dimension of teacher education by proposing common
curriculum elements, learning modules and methodological resources.
Particular focus will be given to strengthening teachers’ ability to teach the civic dimension,
participation, and democratic competence, which are important key competences in times
of polarisation, global change, and the challenges facing democratic societies.
As sustainable civic learning should involve the entire school community, including
parents, community groups, and NGOs, in the spirit of the ‘whole school approach‘ (WSA),
the partners also consider democracy-related learning to be a collaborative task for
teachers.
Goals
1) To create the conditions for a sustainable Teacher Academy Alliance;
2) To develop a framework of teachers competences;
3) To collaboratively develop learning modules and lessons plans;
4) To develop and distribute a toolkit for the creation of Urban Learning Ecosystems;
5) To study and test ways to quickly upscale good practice through existing teachers
training networks;
6) To document and systemically evaluate the innovative practice generated in partner
schools

The project is coordinated by Boğaziçi University (TR) in cooperation with 11 partners.
